Kampala, Uganda: Fresh details have emerged on the passing of fallen Makerere University Business School (MUBS) and Victoria University senior lecturer Dr Tom Patrick Mugizi, whose decomposing body was found inside his residence in Kisota Zone, Kikaaya Parish, Nakawa Division, on Saturday morning.

Dr Mugizi’s death became public on Sunday in a story first published by DailyExpress after Victoria University announced the loss of its staff member through a social media statement.

While the university did not disclose the circumstances surrounding his death, information obtained by this publication indicates that the 64-year-old academic was discovered lifeless in his bedroom on Saturday, January 3, 2026.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Mugizi’s death was reported by the deceased’s sister, Ms Annet Runtemu Nsasiirwe, after repeated attempts to reach him by phone from December 31, 2025, proved futile.

“She became concerned after failing to reach him for several days and requested a neighbour to check on him,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.

The neighbour reportedly found Dr Mugizi lying dead in his bed in a decomposing state. Police said the house was found open, with no visible signs of forced entry or theft.

Officers from Kira Road Police Division later visited and documented the scene, recorded statements from relevant witnesses, and conveyed the body to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Preliminary police findings indicate that Dr Mugizi had a history of chronic illness, although the exact cause of death remains unknown pending the autopsy report.

Police say investigations are ongoing as detectives await the postmortem results to guide further action.

Dr Mugizi served as a senior lecturer at Makerere University Business School and Victoria University, where he was widely regarded as a committed academic whose work in teaching and mentorship shaped many students.

In a statement issued on its official X account, Victoria University described Dr Mugizi as a dedicated and esteemed member of staff.

“His wisdom, humility and commitment to shaping minds will never be forgotten,” the university said. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues and students during this difficult time.”
