Kampala, Uganda: The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Local Government, Ben Kumumanya, has urged Local Government Communication Officers to proactively publicise government programmes and interventions, saying effective communication is critical to service delivery, transparency and accountability.

Kumumanya made the remarks during a meeting of Local Government Communication Officers, where he stressed that timely and accurate information enables citizens to better understand government policies, programmes and development initiatives implemented at the grassroots.

In a separate engagement at the same meeting, the Permanent Secretary presided over the handover of laptops to the communication officers, noting that the equipment will significantly ease their work by improving efficiency, timeliness and accuracy in information dissemination.

He said the laptops were delivered in fulfilment of a pledge made during the previous Communication Officers’ meeting held last year, reaffirming government’s commitment to equipping officers with the tools required to effectively execute their mandate.

Kumumanya encouraged the officers to use the equipment responsibly and innovatively to strengthen public engagement and promote a positive image of government service delivery across the country.

As he closed the meeting, the Permanent Secretary also emphasised the need for wide dissemination of local government job advertisements, saying increased publicity would help attract qualified applicants and address the challenge of unemployment and unfilled positions in local governments.
