Kamuli, Uganda: The Uganda People’s Defence Force has handed over patient shades to two lower health facilities in Kamuli District in a move aimed at improving service delivery and easing congestion for patients seeking care.
The facilities, Nawankofu Health Centre II in Namasagali Sub-county and Nabirama Health Centre II in Butansi Sub-county, received the structures on Thursday, January 8, 2026, under the UPDF’s community support initiative.
Handing over the facilities, Kamuli UPDF Cluster Commander Allan Kitanda urged health workers to closely collaborate with local leaders to strengthen service delivery.
“Work with local leaders and make use of them to improve health services to the community through lobbying and implementing what they advocate for,” Col Kitanda said.
He also called on community members to take ownership of the new facilities and ensure their protection. “This is your facility. Protect it so that when we come back and find it in good condition, we can add more facilities to the health centre,” he said.
Kamuli District Health Officer James Waako welcomed the intervention and pledged to advocate for the upgrading of the two facilities to Health Centre III status.
“I will advocate for the elevation of these facilities because they serve a large population, but their services remain limited due to their current level,” Dr Waako said.
Meanwhile, Nawankofu HCII in-charge Penina Nakamya highlighted persistent challenges affecting service delivery at the facility, including understaffing, lack of a perimeter fence and absence of electricity.
“These challenges hinder effective service delivery to the community and need urgent attention,” Nakamya said.
The Kamuli UPDF Cluster has in recent years implemented several community-focused projects across the district, particularly in the health sector, as part of efforts to improve access to basic services and strengthen civil-military cooperation.
