Yumbe, Uganda: At least five people were left seriously injured on Friday evening after violent clashes erupted between rival political supporters during a campaign rally in Yumbe District, heightening fears of escalating election-related violence just days before the January 15 general elections.
Police said the incident occurred at about 5:00 pm in Tuliki Village, Arilo Sub-county, during the final campaign rally of Aringa North parliamentary aspirant Karimu Musa, also known as Komoro.
According to a police incident report (YBE SD REF: 70/10/01/2026), violence broke out when supporters of incumbent flag bearer Onzima Godfrey reportedly arrived at the venue carrying posters, triggering an attack by a rival group armed with sticks and pangas.
The five people sustained injuries during the assault were identified as Abdul Hamid Nuru, 32, peasant farmer, Chandiga Adinan, 51, a peasant farmer, Taban Yasin, 32, peasant farmer, Manager Jawad, 21, peasant farmer and Yope Said, 47, peasant farmer.

Police said all the victims are residents of different parishes in Yumbe District and belong to the Aringa ethnic community.
Officers visited the scene, recorded witness statements and issued Police Form 3 to the victims to facilitate medical examination and treatment.
One suspect, Andruga Swadick, also known as Angolibo and the LC1 Chairperson of Abiriirua Village, was arrested to assist with investigations. The case is currently being handled at Yumbe Central Police Station, with further inquiries ongoing.
North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson Collins Asea confirmed the incident and strongly condemned the violence. “Anyone found guilty of inciting or participating in election-related violence will face the full extent of the law,” SP Asea said, urging political actors and supporters to exercise restraint.
The attack comes amid rising political tensions in the West Nile region, following recent violent incidents reported in Madi-Okollo District and Nebbi Municipality, raising concern among security agencies over a possible escalation ahead of polling day.
Authorities have repeatedly called for calm, warning that acts of violence threaten not only lives and property but also the integrity of the electoral process as Ugandans prepare to vote in a highly charged political environment.
