Mbale, Uganda: The Minister for the Luwero Triangle, Alice Kaboyo, has commended HRH Jude Mike Mudoma, the Umukuka III of Bugisu, for providing stable leadership through the Bugisu Cultural Institution and working closely with government to promote development in the sub-region.

The remarks were made during a courtesy visit by Kaboyo to the Umukuka’s palace while she was on an official visit to the Bugisu region.

Speaking to this website, the institution’s spokesperson, Steven Masiga, said the Minister praised the Bugisu Cultural Institution for maintaining a cooperative relationship with government, noting that cultural and traditional institutions should complement national development efforts rather than clash with state authorities.

“The minister wondered why a cultural institution should fight government when development is achieved through cooperation,” Masiga said.

Kaboyo also gave a historical account of how the liberation struggle that shaped modern Uganda had roots in Bugisu during the early 1970s, underscoring the region’s long-standing contribution to national politics and governance.

In his remarks, Umukuka III Mudoma pledged continued collaboration with government, saying the Bugisu Cultural Institution remains committed to promoting peace, unity and development among the Bamasaaba.

He revealed that the institution recently engaged clan chairpersons across Bugisu to mobilise communities for peaceful participation in the upcoming general elections, which are due in four days.

The Umukuka further disclosed that a recent cultural symposium organised by the institution attracted more than 2,000 Bamasaaba, with funding support from government, aimed at strengthening civic awareness and peaceful coexistence.

“The institution continues to advise its people to avoid violence and to participate peacefully in the electoral process,” Masiga said.

The meeting was attended by several officials from the Bugisu Cultural Institution, including Minister for Public Engagements Michael Werikhe, Minister Irene Manghali, Minister for Agriculture Peter Kiwusu, Minister for Umukuka’s Affairs Richard Wambede, Special Envoy Wamisutu, and Protocol Officer Vincent, among others.
