Uganda grants special clearance to international schools amid calendar shift

The Ministry of Education has cleared international schools in Uganda to continue Term Two classes and ongoing exams despite the February 10 reopening date, citing distinct academic calendars and international examination requirements.

Kampala, Uganda: Government of Uganda has formally authorised international schools in the country to continue with Term Two instruction and ongoing examinations, despite the nationwide adjustment of the school calendar that pushed the official reopening date for most schools to February 10, 2026.

In a circular dated January 21, 2026, the Ministry of Education and Sports acknowledged that international schools operate under distinct academic calendars that are aligned to international examination systems and cannot easily be interrupted without disadvantaging learners.

“The Ministry of Education and Sports is cognisant of the fact that international schools operate under different academic calendars, which are aligned to the requirements of the respective examination systems,” the circular reads, citing Cambridge International Examinations, the International Baccalaureate (IB), the French National Baccalaureate, and the American system of education.

The Ministry noted that, in line with these international frameworks, many learners in international schools had already reported for Term Two instruction before government announced the postponement of reopening of schools and other educational institutions to February 10, largely due to prevailing national circumstances, including election-related considerations.

“In light of the foregoing and considering the need to ensure continuity of learning and orderly administration of academic programmes, the Ministry hereby authorises international schools to continue with Term Two instructional activities and proceed with ongoing examinations,” the directive, signed by Cleophus Mugenyi on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, and copied to the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, as well as the Ministers of State for Education and Sports.

However, the clearance comes with conditions.

The Ministry stressed that all instruction and examinations must be conducted “in accordance with approved curricula, examination schedules, and applicable regulatory and quality assurance requirements” and that the authorisation does not exempt schools from compliance with the Education Act and other relevant regulations.

“All proprietors and principals are reminded to ensure full compliance with the Education Act, relevant regulations, and any guidelines issued by the Ministry from time to time,” the circular adds, noting that government will continue to monitor and supervise academic activities to ensure adherence to national education standards.

The clarification has eased anxiety among administrators, parents and learners in international schools, particularly candidate classes preparing for internationally scheduled examinations that follow fixed global timelines.

Among the reputable international schools in Uganda expected to benefit from the clearance, especially within Kampala and its surroundings, are Kampala International School Uganda (KISU), Delhi Public School International, International School of Uganda (ISU), Kampala Diplomatic International School, Acorns International School, Ambrosoli International School, Galaxy International School Uganda, and Rainbow International School.

Education experts say the Ministry’s decision reflects a pragmatic balance between national considerations and the realities of globally integrated education systems, ensuring learners are not academically disadvantaged by disruptions beyond their control.
