Kaliro, Uganda: Hon. Namukuta Brenda has made history after becoming the first Woman Member of Parliament in Kaliro District to win a second consecutive term, breaking a long-standing political pattern that had seen the seat change hands every election cycle.

Her re-election marks a significant milestone in the district’s political history, overturning the widely held belief that the Kaliro Woman MP seat was a single-term position. Since the district’s creation, no woman legislator had managed to retain the seat until now.

Hon. Namukuta’s political journey began in 2017 when she was elected District Councillor representing Workers. During her tenure, she built strong grassroots networks and positioned herself as a hands-on leader.

Barely a year into the role, she declared her intention to contest for the Kaliro District Woman MP seat in the 2021 General Elections.

She emerged the youngest candidate in the race and went on to win the 2020 party primaries by a wide margin before securing victory in the general election. Her first term in Parliament was characterised by visibility, accountability, and a strong focus on service delivery.

Rejecting what locals often describe as “Tikulyamu bulya n’omala n’oyaba”, a politics of personal gain without impact, Namukuta adopted a results-oriented leadership style that prioritised community needs over personal benefit.

As a Member of Parliament and a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Health, she successfully lobbied the Ministry of Health to equip Health Centre IIIs across Kaliro District with essential medical equipment, a move that significantly improved healthcare delivery at the community level.

Beyond the health sector, she consistently engaged central government institutions to secure development interventions and resources for Kaliro, ensuring the district benefited from national programmes. Her accessibility, energy, and responsiveness strengthened public trust and inspired increased political participation, particularly among young women.

In the most recent elections, voters overwhelmingly renewed their mandate, granting her a second term and rewriting Kaliro’s political narrative.

Her victory stands as a testament to the power of consistent service, integrity, and dedication, proving that performance, not superstition or tradition, ultimately shapes leadership outcomes.
