Zombo, Uganda: Paidha Town Council has kicked off a major rehabilitation of its public abattoir in Jupuru, Omua Ward, in a move aimed at restoring functionality, improving hygiene standards, and safeguarding the local meat supply chain.

Council officials say the seven-year-old facility had fallen into a state of disrepair, with broken window panes, weakened pillars, and ageing walls threatening its operational integrity and safety.

The LCIII Chairperson of Paidha Town Council, Innocent Godfred Onega, said the council approved a Shs13.9 million refurbishment project funded through local revenue, underscoring the town’s commitment to maintaining essential public infrastructure.

“We expect the contractor, Jalom Investment Limited, to deliver quality work within the stipulated four-month timeframe,” Onega said.

The contract has been awarded to Jalom Investment Limited, with the town engineer, Jacob Kwesigwa, confirming that the project is scheduled for completion within four months.

The abattoir is a critical facility in Paidha, serving as a key node in the town’s meat processing and supply chain within one of Zombo District’s busiest commercial centres.

Omua Ward Councillor William Okello, who also serves as Secretary for Works and Transport, welcomed the renovation, saying it will significantly improve public health, hygiene, and safety for both meat handlers and consumers.

Paidha Town Council is a strategic administrative and commercial hub in Zombo District, located in Uganda’s West Nile sub-region and bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the 2024 National Population and Housing Census, the town has a population of 42,733 residents.
