Alebtong, Uganda: The NRM Government Chief Whip and outgoing Ajuri County Member of Parliament, Hon Denis Hamson Obua, has conceded defeat in the just-concluded parliamentary election rerun, thanking voters for the opportunity to serve and pledging continued contribution to national development outside elective politics.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 28, Obua acknowledged the outcome of the re-run held on Tuesday following a directive by the Electoral Commission, and congratulated Fred Jalameso, the Uganda People’s Congress candidate, who was declared winner.

“I gave it my all, now it’s time to pass the torch,” Obua said. “I thank the people of Ajuri County for the trust and opportunity they gave me to serve them.”

According to official results released by the Electoral Commission, Jalameso polled 16,336 votes, narrowly defeating Obua, a Central Executive Committee (CEC) member of the ruling National Resistance Movement, who garnered 15,568 votes in a closely contested race.

Despite the loss, Obua said he respects the will of the electorate and remains committed to serving Uganda in other capacities.

“I congratulate Hon. Fred Jalameso upon his victory and wish him the best as he assumes office for the 2026–2031 term,” Obua said. “I remain committed to contributing to Uganda, the NRM, and the development of Northern Uganda over the next five years, even outside elective politics.”

Obua also urged his supporters to remain calm and cooperate with the incoming leadership in the interest of unity and development in Ajuri County.

Jalameso, a former head teacher at Teso Integrated Secondary School (TISS) and TEPA-Ngora, contested on the UPC ticket and secured victory in what analysts described as one of the most closely watched parliamentary rerun elections in the Lango sub-region.

The rerun was conducted in line with an Electoral Commission order citing irregularities in the earlier poll across 18 polling stations in Ajuri County. Security was heightened during voting, with officials reporting that the exercise proceeded largely peacefully.
