Iganga, Uganda: The National Unity Platform candidate and flag bearer, Kongola Nasser, has been elected Mayor of Iganga Municipality after defeating 14 contenders in one of the most competitive local government races in the district.
According to official results released on Tuesday night, Kongola secured 5,424 votes, comfortably ahead of Hajj Dhabasada Asuman of the ruling National Resistance Movement, who polled just 1,848 votes. Maganda Sowedi, also known as Sadam Junior of the Forum for Democratic Change, finished third with 1,499 votes.
Iganga Municipal Council Speaker Sengoba Musa garnered 870 votes, while former mayor Balaba David received 837 votes, marking his second failed attempt to reclaim the seat.
Other candidates included Ngobi Paul (578 votes), Kalifani Taibu (249), Kaziba Umaru (101), Kisambira Abubakar (92), and Mawanda James (64). Former deputy mayor Ndhazuula Enoch polled 30 votes, Sebata Fred received 39, Katumba Michael got 35, while Mugonzi Wilberforce and popular TikToker Mivule Grace each garnered 19 votes.
Kongola succeeds outgoing mayor Bamu Lulenzi (NUP), who unsuccessfully contested for Iganga Municipality MP as an independent, a seat that was won by NUP flag bearer and lawyer, Abedi Nasser Mudiobole.
The new mayor-elect takes office amid public dissatisfaction over poor garbage management, deteriorating road infrastructure, and delays in implementing government-promised projects, including a 15-kilometre municipal road network and a modern market.
Although Kongola’s nomination initially attracted internal resistance during the NUP vetting process, he went on to secure a decisive victory, consolidating the party’s growing dominance in Iganga District.
NUP emerged with two out of four MPs, won the district chairperson seat through Shabiru Isabirye Kalulu, and secured over 50 per cent of district councillor positions, further strengthening its political grip on the municipality.
Speaking after being declared winner by District Returning Officer Nekesa Assey, Kongola thanked his campaign team and urged unity among contestants. “I dedicate this victory to the people of Iganga. My priority is tackling garbage management, improving roads, and delivering better services for our town,” he said.
