Former BBC journalist Alan Kasujja has been appointed new Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre.

Kampala, Uganda: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed veteran broadcaster Alan Kasujja as Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, according to a letter dated December 27, 2025, detailing the President’s direct involvement in the decision.

The letter, addressed to the Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, was written in response to concerns raised over management issues at the Media Centre.

“I have received your letter dated the 27th November, 2025, regarding the Media Centre. I was not aware of the ongoing manoeuvres,” Museveni wrote, adding that Kasujja’s appointment had earlier been discussed at a senior leadership level.

“However, some weeks ago, we had discussed the idea of Allan Kasujja with you,” he stated.

Museveni said he had already instructed the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Chris Baryomunsi, to effect the appointment. “I have already directed Dr Chris Baryomunsi to appoint Allan Kasujja as Executive Director of the Media Centre. We can, then, look at the others,” the letter reads.

Sources familiar with the matter say “by others”, the President was referring to the redeployment of individuals who had lobbied for the position, including Obed Katureebe, the acting ED, and Duncan Abigaba, a former deputy director at the Government Citizen Interaction Centre.

Museveni further directed the ICT minister to consider additional leadership roles at the Media Centre. “By copy of this letter, I direct Dr Chris Baryomunsi to initiate the procedures for appointing Allan Kasujja and, additionally, assessing others who could serve as Deputy,” the President added.

Kasujja replaces Ofwono Opondo, who resigned in April 2025 after declaring his intention to contest for elective office ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Kasujja brings more than 30 years of experience in broadcast journalism. He rose to prominence in the 1990s at Sanyu FM and Capital FM Uganda, before becoming widely known as the host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Uganda, a role he has held since 2011.

He later joined the British Broadcasting Corporation, where he spent 13 years as a senior presenter on the World Service’s Newsday programme and hosted the Africa Daily podcast. He exited the BBC in August 2025 and previously co-moderated Uganda’s 2016 presidential debate, the first of its kind in the country.

The Uganda Media Centre coordinates official government communication, media briefings and engagement with both domestic and international press.

Kasujja is expected to assume office upon completion of administrative procedures.
