Newborn stolen baby recovered as police arrest suspect, husband in Tororo

Police in Tororo have recovered a newborn baby stolen from Tororo General Hospital and arrested a female suspect and her accomplice.

IP Mugwe Moses, the Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson confirmed the report

Tororo, Uganda: Police in Tororo District have safely recovered a one-day-old baby boy who was stolen from Tororo General Hospital, arresting a female suspect and her husband less than 24 hours after the incident.

The recovery was confirmed on Thursday morning by Mugwe Moses, the Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson, following an operation that led to the suspect’s arrest and the rescue of the child.

“By God’s grace we have broken through about the stolen child. The suspect has been arrested, the child rescued, and the husband to the suspect also arrested,” Mugwe said in a flash report.

The newborn had been stolen at around 11:00am on January 29, 2026, from Tororo General Hospital, shortly after birth.

Police said the baby was taken from his mother, Taka Florence, a 20-year-old resident of Aturukuku Village in Rubongi Sub-county, when she briefly stepped away to buy an item within the hospital premises.

Investigations indicate that an unidentified woman had approached the mother, offered to hold the baby, and placed a red handbag nearby. When the mother returned moments later, both the woman and the child had disappeared.

The case was initially reported at Central Police Station Tororo under SD Ref: 46/29/01/2026, prompting a district-wide search and public alert.

Following the recovery, relatives of the mother were notified and are expected to identify the baby before formal handover. Police said the child has been placed under temporary motherly care pending court processes scheduled for Friday.

The Uganda Police Force commended members of the public, local media houses, and community stakeholders for sharing information that led to the swift breakthrough.
