Police arrest 10 in crackdown on Kira criminal gangs

The suspects were found red-handed smoking suspected narcotic substances inside a wooden structure, where exhibits including rolled sticks and powdered leaves believed to be narcotics were recovered.

Wakiso, Uganda: Police at Kira Division, jointly working with sister security agencies, are holding in custody 10 suspects arrested during a late-night operation in the Buwate–Najjera area aimed at disrupting criminal gangs operating within the Kampala Metropolitan Area.

The operation was conducted on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at about 10:00 pm, according to a statement issued by Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SP Rachael Kawala.

“In an effort to disrupt criminal gangs operating within the Kampala Metropolitan Area, Police at Kira Division, in coordination with sister security agencies, conducted a targeted operation in the Buwate–Najjera area of Kira Municipality on 29th January 2026 at about 10:00 p.m.,” SP Kawala said.

“During the operation, ten suspects were arrested red-handed while smoking suspected narcotic substances inside a wooden structure. Exhibits, including rolled sticks and powdered leaves suspected to be narcotics, were recovered at the scene,” she added.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspects allegedly consume narcotic substances before engaging in criminal activities, including waylaying pedestrians and stoning moving vehicles, which have recently been reported in parts of Kira Municipality.

“A case of possession of narcotic substances, to wit, opium, has been registered against the suspects,” Kawala said, adding that they remain in police custody pending court proceedings.

Police further warned that security operations will continue during and after the election period as part of efforts to maintain public safety and curb crime in the metropolitan area.
