Kiryandongo, Uganda: The National Information Technology Authority–Uganda (NITA-U) has launched plans to expand internet infrastructure in Kiryandongo District under the Uganda Digital Acceleration Project (UDAP), a government initiative backed by the World Bank aimed at closing Uganda’s digital divide.

The rollout, unveiled during an inception meeting with district leaders and stakeholders, will focus on improving access to affordable internet connectivity, strengthening e-governance services, and promoting digital inclusion among underserved communities, including refugees and host populations.

Speaking at the meeting, Richard Obita, Director of Technical Services at NITA-U, said Kiryandongo is among 12 host districts and 13 refugee settlements selected to benefit from the project.

“The Uganda Digital Acceleration Project is designed to ensure that no one is left behind in Uganda’s digital journey,” Obita said. “By expanding internet infrastructure in districts like Kiryandongo, we are enabling government institutions, refugees, civil society organisations and local communities to access affordable internet and essential online services.”

Obita added that the project goes beyond connectivity, incorporating e-waste management initiatives to promote environmentally sustainable digital growth as internet usage expands.

Under the programme, new infrastructure is expected to lower the cost of internet services and improve access for public institutions, schools, and communities, enabling faster and more efficient delivery of government services through digital platforms.

Kiryandongo district authorities welcomed the intervention, pledging full cooperation to ensure its smooth implementation.

Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Deo Kabugo thanked NITA-U for selecting the district, describing the project as timely and transformative.

“We are grateful to NITA-U for choosing Kiryandongo to benefit from this important national project,” Kabugo said. “As a district, we are committed to providing all the necessary support to ensure the success of the Uganda Digital Acceleration Project.”

As part of its community-centred approach, UDAP will also establish two fully equipped community telecentres in Kiryandongo District. The centres will offer public access to computers, internet services and digital tools, creating opportunities for learning, communication and participation in the digital economy.

Once implemented, the project is expected to strengthen digital participation, empower vulnerable groups and support Uganda’s broader agenda of inclusive digital transformation.
