Jinja, Uganda: Police in Kiira Region on Friday impounded a motor vehicle and arrested its driver at Jinja Nile Bridge for illegally modifying a Toyota Mark X into a pickup, an act authorities say poses serious road safety risks.

The development was confirmed on Friday by SP Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police Spokesperson, who disclosed the impoundment on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. Kananura declined to reveal the identity of the suspect but identified the vehicle as registration number UAR 603B.

“Imagine a Toyota Mark X converted into a pickup. Such vehicle modifications are unlawful,” Kananura wrote, condemning the practice as dangerous and contrary to traffic regulations.

He said the arrest was carried out under the ongoing Arrive Alive Phase II operations, a nationwide enforcement campaign aimed at improving road safety and ensuring strict compliance with traffic laws.

“Under the #Arrive #Alive Phase II operations, no stone will be left unturned in enforcing road safety and compliance,” Kananura added.

The incident comes amid growing concern over Uganda’s persistent road crash statistics, with Traffic Police repeatedly attributing the majority of accidents to human error. Common causes include speeding, drink-driving, reckless driving and operating vehicles in dangerous mechanical conditions, including unlawful modifications.
