Kibuku, Uganda: Two people died on the spot in an early morning tragic road crash on the Iganga–Mbale highway after the vehicle they were travelling in lost control and rammed into a culvert in Kibuku District.

The fatal accident occurred at about 6:00 am on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at Kotolo village, near the entrance to Ezra Memorial College Secondary School, police have confirmed.

The victims were travelling in a grey Toyota Corolla registration number UAQ 394T, heading from Iganga towards Mbale, when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, possibly due to fatigue. The car veered off the road and crashed into a culvert.

According to police, the passenger died instantly at the scene, while the driver was rushed to Kibuku Health Centre IV with serious injuries but was later pronounced dead.

Officers from Tirinyi Police Station, led by No. 27297 H/C Eriebu Moses, responded to the scene, documented the crash, and towed the wreckage to Tirinyi Police Station for inspection. The bodies were taken to Kibuku Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examination before being released to relatives.

ASP Kyempasa Wilfred, the Police Public Relations Officer for Bukedi North Region, confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the crash.

A relative who spoke to DailyExpress at Tirinyi Police Station identified the driver as Emmanuel Mawona, a salesman at his uncle’s hardware shop in Natete, Kampala. The passenger was identified only as Levi, described as Mawona’s in-law.

The two, both believed to be in their thirties, were travelling from Kampala to Bugaya in Sironko District at the time of the accident.

Mawona’s uncle, Patrick Mudoko, who owns the hardware business in Natete, is a native of Buyaga, Sironko District.

The crash adds to growing concerns over early-morning road accidents on major highways, often linked to driver fatigue and loss of concentration.
