Kampala, Uganda: The 2026 National Basketball League (NBL) season tipped off over the weekend with a flurry of action across Lugogo, Kira Den and other venues, producing emphatic wins, tight finishes and early signals of which teams mean business this season.
Record champions City Oilers set the tone on opening night at Lugogo Indoor Arena, defeating defending champions Namuwongo Blazers 74–65 in a high-profile men’s clash on Friday.
The Oilers asserted control after halftime, combining disciplined ball movement with aggressive defence to blunt the Blazers’ challenge.
Fayed Baale led the scoring with 20 points, while Landry Ndikumana added 17 and Joel Lukoji chipped in 12.

For Namuwongo, Peter Obleng scored 11 points, and Moses Mugisha added 10, but the Blazers struggled to match the Oilers’ composure in the closing quarters.
Women’s Champions Stumble, Others Shine
Saturday’s women’s games produced mixed fortunes for the title holders. JKL Lady Dolphins suffered an early setback, losing 73–65 to a determined KCCA Leopards side.
At Kira Den, Victoria University She Crocs opened their campaign with a controlled 45–34 victory over Miracle Eaglets after leading 20–09 at halftime.
Sunday belonged to UCU Lady Canons, who delivered the most dominant performance of the weekend, dismantling Angels 73–29 at Lugogo. The Lady Canons raced to a 13–0 start and never looked back.
Martina Anyango led UCU with 13 points, while Sylvia Nantongo added 10.
Elsewhere, KIU Rangers edged Nabisunsa Girls 66–61 in a thriller, with Ines Kanyamuneza scoring 25 points and Sharon Kirabo posting a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds.
Men’s Games: Tight Battles and Big Statements
In the men’s division, Sommet BC beat JKL Dolphins 65–56, while Victoria Crocs cruised past Kampala Rockets 83–62.
JT Jaguars narrowly edged KCCA Panthers 51–49 in one of the tightest contests of the weekend.
On Sunday, UCU Canons beat UMU Flames 79–64, with Jimmy Otim leading the way on 21 points. Rezlife Saints impressed with an 83–63 win over UPDF Tomahawks, powered by a 21-point debut from Edrine Ekau.
