Hoima City, Uganda: Patriotic League of Uganda’s Mercy Kanyesigye has pledged to champion inclusive and integrity-driven leadership after emerging winner of the heated National Female Youth Member of Parliament race during the National Youth Council elections held last Friday in Hoima City.
In a message posted via her socials addressed to National Youth Council members and supporters following her victory on February 6, 2026, Kanyesigye, who stood as independent after losing the flag to NRM’s Ampaire Diana Kampe, described the win as ‘a will of the young people’ across the country who she said stood firm despite intimidation and external pressure during the entire electoral process.
“This victory is not just mine; it belongs to each of you, especially the young people who stood firm and strong in the face of intimidation,” Kanyesigye said, thanking delegates who voted “by integrity.”
She pledged to serve all youth across Uganda, including those who did not support her candidacy, saying her focus would be on building an inclusive environment where every voice is heard and valued.
“I pledge to work tirelessly for all youth across Uganda regardless of whether you supported my candidacy,” she said.
Kanyesigye also extended appreciation to her competitors and called for unity within the youth fraternity. “I extend my gratitude to my competitors for putting up a good fight. I invite you to join me as we work together to serve the young people of our country,” she said, signing off with her symbolic slogan “Tuko Pamoja.”

Her election comes at a time when youth leaders are increasingly demanding stronger representation, accountability, and inclusion in national decision-making, particularly on issues affecting employment, education, and political participation.
The National Female Youth MP is elected by delegates of the National Youth Council during a national conference convened to choose youth representatives to Parliament. The position represents young women at the national level and is part of Uganda’s affirmative action framework under the youth constituency.
The Hoima City conference attracted delegates from across the country and was conducted amid heightened competition, reflecting growing interest among youth leaders in national representation and policy influence.
