Arua, Uganda: Three members of the same family were killed instantly on Monday evening following a fatal road traffic crash along the Nebbi–Arua highway at Eruba Village, near Odianyadri Trading Centre in Arua District.
The accident, registered as Arua District TAR 12/2026, occurred at about 6:50 pm and involved a green Isuzu bus, registration UBJ 736Z, belonging to Link Bus Company, and a red, numberless Senke-type motorcycle.
According to SSP Josephine Angucia, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, the bus was travelling from Hoima via Nebbi Town towards Arua City when the crash occurred.
“While overtaking a Toyota Noah vehicle, the bus collided head-on with an oncoming motorcycle,” Angucia said, adding that all three occupants of the motorcycle died on the spot.
Police identified the deceased as Anguyo (35), a passenger; Santino Onzima (50), the motorcycle rider; and Madima Rafael (55), another passenger and LC I Chairperson of Cirifi Village, Ayavu Parish in Vurra Sub-county. All were from the same family and village.
Preliminary police investigations indicate careless overtaking by the bus driver as the likely cause of the crash. The driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the accident and remains at large.
Police officers responded to the scene, conducted documentation and conveyed the bodies to Arua Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Both the Link Bus and the motorcycle were impounded and parked at Arua Central Business Division Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles as investigations continue.
Police have renewed calls to motorists to strictly observe traffic regulations, particularly avoiding reckless overtaking, warning that such behaviour continues to claim lives on major highways.
The latest tragedy adds to growing concerns over road safety in Uganda. According to the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report 2024, at least 5,144 people died in road crashes last year—an average of 14 deaths per day—representing a 7 percent increase from 4,806 fatalities recorded in 2023.
