Kampala, Uganda: The Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court has sent to prison a man accused of forging a letter purportedly signed by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to fraudulently appoint a Managing Director of the Uganda Railways Corporation (URC).

Arinda Nicholas was on Wednesday arraigned before the court following his arrest by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in conjunction with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

He faces charges of forgery, uttering a false document and obtaining money by false pretence. Court remanded him until March 9, 2026, as investigations continue.

Prosecution alleges that Arinda, together with another suspect still at large, created a false appointment letter dated December 4, 2024 (Ref: PO/23), allegedly appointing Mr Nagwomu Alfred as Managing Director of URC.

The letter was reportedly presented as having been signed by President Museveni, which prosecutors say was untrue.

Investigators further allege that the accused extorted more than Shs20 million from Mr Nagwomu, claiming the money would be used to secure the top managerial position at the state corporation.

The Anti-Corruption Unit has come out to warn members of the public to verify all government appointments through official channels and to be cautious of individuals claiming to influence high-level appointments for a fee.

The case adds to a series of fraud incidents in which individuals have allegedly forged documents bearing the names of senior government officials to solicit money from unsuspecting victims.
