Masaka, Uganda: Maj Gen Deus Sande Karachi, the Commander of the UPDF Armoured Division based at Kasijjagirwa Barracks in Masaka, has died, DailyExpress reports.
According to a close family member, Gen Karachi reportedly succumbed to heart failure, although the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) had not yet issued an official statement confirming the circumstances surrounding his death by press time.
Gen Sande Karachi was serving as Commander of the Armoured Division stationed at Kasijjagirwa Barracks, one of the key military installations in the Greater Masaka sub-region. The Armoured Division plays a central role in mechanised warfare, strategic mobility, and national defence operations.
His death comes barely a week after the passing of Maj Gen Francis Takirwa, the Deputy Commander of Land Forces, who also reportedly died after a stroke-related illness.
The back-to-back loss of two senior generals has sent shockwaves through the defence establishment, raising concerns within military circles and among the public.
Gen Sande Karachi was regarded as a seasoned officer with decades of service in the UPDF, having risen through the ranks to command one of the army’s most strategic divisions.
As news of his death spread, colleagues and residents in Masaka expressed grief over the loss of a senior military leader who had overseen operations at the Armoured Division.
The UPDF leadership is expected to issue an official communication detailing funeral arrangements and providing formal confirmation of the cause of death.
More details will follow as they become available.
