Lira City, Uganda: The academic community in northern Uganda is mourning the passing of former Vice Chancellor of All Saints University Lango (ASUL), Prof Andrew Anthony Cula, who was found dead at his residence in Teso Bar, West Division, Lira City, on Wednesday morning.
University sources and close colleagues confirmed that Prof Cula’s body was discovered on February 11, 2026, with reports indicating that the retired professor reportedly fell ill during the night and attempted to seek assistance, but help came too late.
According to officials familiar with the matter, Prof Cula had been living alone in Lira while his family resided in Kampala. His remains were transferred to Lira University Teaching Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Academic Career and Leadership
Prof Cula retired in November 2025 after serving as Vice Chancellor of ASUL, a private institution founded in 2008 that has grown steadily over the years to serve students across the Lango sub-region and beyond.
During his tenure, he was credited with strengthening academic programs, expanding institutional visibility, and advocating for greater government financial support to private universities grappling with economic strain in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
An academic with a background in public health and microbiology, Prof Cula was widely respected for his research, administrative leadership, and mentorship of young scholars.
Academic Fraternity Mourns
Education stakeholders in Lango and across northern Uganda have described his passing as a major loss to the higher education sector.
Colleagues say he remained actively engaged in academic and advisory roles even after retirement, offering guidance on institutional development and student welfare.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be officially announced as family members coordinate with university leadership.
