Kibuku fish trader killed in hit and run crash on Mbale-Tirinyi highway

A 63-year-old fishmonger has died in a hit-and-run crash at Kadama Trading Centre along the Tirinyi–Mbale Highway in Kibuku District. Police are hunting for the Toyota Hiace driver who fled the scene after the fatal collision.

Kibuku, Uganda: A 63-year-old fishmonger died on the spot in a hit-and-run crash at Kadama Trading Centre along the busy Tirinyi–Mbale Highway in Kibuku District, police have confirmed.

The deceased, identified as Christopher Mutono, a resident of Namukalake Cell in Kadama Town Council, was knocked dead on the spot at around 8:00 pm on Wednesday, February 12, 2026, by a speeding Toyota Hiace taxi whose driver fled the scene.

According to Bukedi North Regional Police spokesperson ASP Wilfred Kyempasa, the fatal incident occurred when two taxis were travelling from Mbale towards Tirinyi. The rear vehicle reportedly attempted to overtake the front taxi at high speed and in the process rammed into Mutono, who was riding a bicycle.

“The driver did not stop after the crash and sped off. Inquiries are ongoing to trace the vehicle and arrest the driver,” ASP Kyempasa said.

Eyewitness Sumaya Kadondi, a Health Information Assistant at Kadama Health Centre III, said she and a colleague had just crossed the road moments before the collision.

“We heard a loud bang and rushed back only to find the man lying lifeless on the road,” she recounted.

Residents described Mutono as a well-known and friendly trader who had supplied fish in the area for years.

“He was generous and always allowed customers to bargain. The community has lost a good man,” one resident said.

The incident was reported to Kibuku Central Police Station by IP Angella Max. Police officers, including IP Max and H/m Eriebu, visited the scene, documented evidence and filled postmortem forms before handing the body over to relatives pending a postmortem examination.

Police have urged motorists to exercise caution along the Tirinyi–Mbale Highway, a corridor that has recorded several fatal crashes linked to reckless overtaking and speeding.
