Wakiso, Uganda: The Police at Nsangi Division are holding in custody 32 suspects arrested during a late-night disruptive operation targeting youths allegedly involved in smoking suspected narcotic drugs and snatching phones and bags during rush hours.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the operation was conducted between 10:30 pm and 3:30 am in Kyengera Central, Nabaziza, Masanda and Kinawa following public complaints about rising street crime.
“The operation was carried out between 10:30 PM and 3:30 AM. A total of thirty-two (32) suspects were arrested and are currently detained at Kyengera Police Station pending screening and further investigation.” Owoyesigyire said in a Monday police statement, adding that the operation forms part of broader efforts to restore order in identified crime hotspots within the Nsangi policing area.
The crackdown comes amid growing public anxiety over reported attacks in traffic jams, on boda bodas and in urban neighbourhoods.
Early on Monday, NBS Journalist and News Anchor, Ms Sheilah Tusiime, shared concerns on social media, noting that residents increasingly encounter stories of frightening crime ordeals while going about daily business.
“Lately, you can hardly scroll through your timeline or go about your daily business without coming across a story of someone who was attacked or went through a frightening crime ordeal, either on a boda boda, in a traffic jam, or elsewhere in town,” Tusiime wrote on her X handle.
Responding to her concerns, Police Spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma said operational and intelligence teams have been notified to intensify surveillance in affected areas.
“We acknowledge the growing concern about such incidents. Our operational and intelligence units are doing their level best to bring those criminals to book in the mentioned crime hotspots,” Kituuma said.
He urged members of the public to promptly report suspicious activity and utilise police hotlines to enable real-time response. “Together we shall make our streets and neighbourhoods safer,” he added.
Police say similar operations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to curb drug abuse and street-related crimes within Kampala Metropolitan areas.
