Woman arrested for strangling co-wife to death on Valentine’s Day

Police in Adjumani have arrested a 35-year-old woman over the alleged strangulation of her co-wife during a polygamous household dispute as investigations into the fatal domestic violence case continue.

Adjumani, Uganda: Police in Adjumani District have arrested a 35-year-old woman over the alleged strangulation of her co-wife during a domestic dispute linked to polygamous household tensions.

The fatal incident occurred on the night of February 14, 2026, at about 10:00 pm in Nyumanzi, Adjumani District.

According to North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson Collins Asea, the husband, Maiku Ahmad, had convened a meeting with local elders to resolve ongoing misunderstandings involving his two wives.

The women were identified as Baatio Jane, 35, and Zakia Ahmad, 34, both members of the Madi community and residents of Egge Village, Ajugopi Parish, Dzaip Sub-county.

Police say that during the meeting, tensions escalated and the father-in-law, Kanaa Swaibu, suspended proceedings and instructed the women to leave the compound.

“As they exited, a physical confrontation broke out between the co-wives,” SP Asea said.

It is alleged that Baatio Jane overpowered Zakia Ahmad and strangled her by squeezing her neck, causing suffocation.

Bystanders intervened and rushed Zakia to Nyumanzi Health Centre III for emergency medical attention. However, she was pronounced dead at around midnight.

Police responded and arrested the suspect at the scene. The deceased’s body was later transferred to Adjumani General Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

The homicide team documented and processed the crime scene as investigations commenced.

SP Asea confirmed that inquiries are ongoing, describing the case as a tragic example of escalating domestic conflict that resulted in fatal consequences.

Police have urged families to seek peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms and community mediation to prevent violence in intimate and family settings.
