Police in Zombo are investigating the circumstances under which a resident of Gira Village in Abanga Sub-county was found dead in what investigators are treating as an apparent case of suicide.

Zombo, Uganda: Police in West Nile’s Zombo District are investigating the circumstances under which a resident of Gira Village in Abanga Sub-county was found dead in what investigators are treating as an apparent case of suicide.

The deceased, identified as Bedi Amos, was discovered on Monday morning, February 16, 2026, at about 7:00 am, hanging from a rope tied to a jackfruit tree near his home in Serr Parish, Zombo District.

According to Lenga Orengu, the LCI Chairperson of Orengu Village, local leaders and residents retrieved the body before notifying officers at Serr Police Post.

Police later visited the scene to document the incident and commence investigations. Preliminary findings indicate no signs of foul play at this stage, though inquiries into the exact circumstances and possible contributing factors are ongoing.

Local authorities have urged residents experiencing social, domestic or psychological distress to seek immediate support from community leaders, religious figures, elders or relevant government structures.

Suicide a Growing Public Health Concern

Suicide remains a significant public health concern in Uganda, often associated with financial hardship, family conflict, domestic disputes and untreated mental health conditions.

According to the Uganda Police Force 2024 Annual Crime Report, 218 cases of attempted suicide were recorded nationwide, up from 165 cases in 2023.

While completed suicides are not classified as criminal offences under Ugandan law, attempted suicide cases are tracked for intervention and statistical purposes.

Authorities note that reported figures likely represent only a fraction of actual cases, underscoring the need for stronger community awareness, early intervention mechanisms and improved access to mental health support services.
