Kampala, Uganda: The holy month of Ramadan will begin on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, following the sighting of the crescent moon in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday evening.
Saudi authorities confirmed the moon sighting, signalling the start of the ninth month of the Islamic (Hijri) lunar calendar. Muslims across Uganda and the world will begin fasting from dawn to dusk starting Wednesday.
Ramadan holds special significance in Islam as it is believed to be the month in which the Qur’an was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad. During this period, believers abstain from food and drink during daylight hours, dedicating the month to prayer, reflection, charity and increased recitation of the Qur’an.
Beyond fasting, Muslims intensify acts of worship, including nightly prayers (Taraweeh), charity (Zakat and Sadaqah), and spiritual self-discipline.
The final ten days of Ramadan are considered particularly sacred, culminating in Laylat Al Qadr, the Night of Power, believed to be the night when the Qur’an was revealed. While traditionally observed on the 27th night, the exact date varies each year based on the lunar calendar.
Islamic teachings hold that worship performed on Laylat Al Qadr carries rewards greater than those of a thousand months.
The Holy Month of fasting concludes with Eid Al-Fitr, a joyous festival marked by communal prayers, feasting, and acts of charity.
As Ramadan begins, Muslim leaders have encouraged the faithful to embrace unity, compassion and generosity, especially toward vulnerable communities.
Coincidentally, Ramadan begins at the same time Christians are observing Lent, a solemn period of fasting and prayer ahead of Easter.
