Kampala, Uganda: At least 250 suspects have been arrested in a sweeping joint security operation across Wakiso District and Kampala as authorities intensify crackdowns on rising street crime and narcotics abuse.
The February 16, 2026, operation targeted known criminal hotspots in Nansana West Ward, Kyebando and Gganda in Wakiso Sub-county and Nansana Municipality; Kitukutwe Zone, Kiwologoma and Namugongo Nsawo Zone in Kira Municipality; Kyanja under Kira Road Policing Area; and selected black spots within Kampala’s Central Business District (CBD).
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the coordinated raids were aimed at dismantling criminal gathering points linked to narcotics use, phone snatching and other urban offenses affecting residents.
“These areas had been identified as gathering points for individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activities that have been affecting residents and members of the public,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.
He confirmed that a total of 65 suspects were arrested in Nansana and surrounding areas, 38 suspects in Kira Municipality, 16 suspects in Kyanja, and 136 suspects (134 males and 2 females) in Kampala central business district (CBD).
“All suspects were screened and charged with offenses related to possession of suspected narcotic substances and other related crimes. They are currently detained at the respective police stations pending processing and court appearance,” Owoyesigyire explained, adding exhibits of suspected narcotics were also recovered during the operations.
Part of Sustained Crackdown
The latest sweep comes amid heightened public concern over increasing street crime, particularly robberies during rush hours, attacks in traffic jams and drug-related disturbances in urban neighbourhoods.
Security agencies have in recent weeks conducted continuous disruptive operations across Kampala Metropolitan areas, including Kyengera, Nansana, Kira and central city zones, in response to complaints from residents and local leaders.
Owoyesigyire said the operations are part of a sustained campaign to restore order. “The operations were successful and are part of ongoing efforts to eliminate criminal elements, dismantle criminal gathering points, and ensure the continued safety and security of the public,” he stated.
Police assured the public that similar enforcement actions will continue as authorities move to curb narcotics abuse and street-level criminal activity.
The intensified presence of joint task force units signals a broader strategy to stabilise urban security and deter repeat offenders in identified hotspots.
