Christians urged to be Ambassadors of Christ as Lent begins

Christians in Kamuli have been urged to embrace prayer, fasting and almsgiving as Lent begins, while Muslim leaders call for charity and peace as Ramadan starts on the same day.

Kamuli, Uganda: The Parish Priest of Kamuli Catholic Parish, Fr Ben Wakabi, has urged Christians to use the Lenten season as a time for reflection, repentance and spiritual renewal, calling on believers to become true ambassadors of Christ.

Speaking during the Ash Wednesday Holy Mass at Our Lady and St Joseph Church in Kamuli Municipality, Fr Wakabi said Lent is a sacred period for reconciling past deeds, correcting mistakes and refocusing on righteous living.

“We should embrace humility and seek renewal in this period. Let us make good the wrongs we have done, improve on our weaknesses and uplift our hopes, faith and commitment to humanity,” he said.

Fr Wakabi emphasized that the ashes placed on the foreheads of believers symbolize repentance and the reminder that “we came from dust and to dust we shall return.”

He encouraged Christians to reflect on the three pillars of Lent — prayer, fasting and almsgiving. “As we receive the ashes, a symbol of repentance and conversion, let us reflect on the three core pillars: praying, fasting and almsgiving,” he added.

Peace During Ramadan

In the other religious camp, the Kamuli District Khadhi, Sheikh Swabiri Ismail Kazibwe, called on Muslims observing the Holy Month of Ramadan to extend charity to the needy and promote harmony within families.

“The Holy Month of Ramadan has started today, February 18. I call upon all Muslims to use this month to help those in need and avoid domestic violence in their homes,” Sheikh Kazibwe said while addressing the press at the district Muslim headquarters.

The simultaneous observance of Lent and Ramadan this year has been described by faith leaders as a unique moment for spiritual growth, discipline and peaceful coexistence among communities.
