Kampala, Uganda: Police at Nateete have arrested a suspect linked to a string of motor vehicle number plate thefts in Kampala and Wakiso districts.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed that the suspect, identified as Semuju Steven, 33, a resident of Busega, was apprehended following coordinated investigations.
During the operation, officers recovered seven stolen number plates, including UAH 286S, UA 309BQ, UA 682BZ, UAM 277G, UAN 796B, and UBK 264Y (pair).
Police said that on the night of February 11, 2026, unknown persons broke into the compound of Lutamaguzi Patrick in Busega–Kabale, Rubaga Division, and stole the number plate from his silver Toyota Opa, registration number UAN 796B.
In what investigators described as a bizarre twist, the suspect reportedly left behind a contact number written on the vehicle — a clue that later proved instrumental in tracing him.
Upon arrest, Semuju allegedly led security agencies to the locations where the stolen plates had been hidden in Busega–Kabale and Kiteemu Kivulu in Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District.
Police said the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue and will be charged in court accordingly.
Authorities have urged motorists to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activity, noting that stolen number plates are often used in committing other crimes.
