Police probe suspected smartphone fraud in Nebbi

According to local authorities, the suspects — described as foreign nationals — allegedly move from Paidha in Zombo District to Nebbi and Pakwach, posing as investors while marketing mobile phones at unusually low prices.

Nebbi, Uganda: Security agencies in Nebbi District have launched investigations into a suspected cross-border electronic fraud scheme involving the sale of counterfeit or tampered smartphones to unsuspecting buyers.

According to local authorities, the suspects, described as foreign nationals, allegedly move from Paidha in Zombo District to Nebbi and Pakwach, posing as investors while marketing mobile phones at unusually low prices.

Victims report that shortly after inserting a SIM card and battery, the devices overheat excessively and malfunction, raising suspicions of compromised or altered hardware.

The matter first gained widespread attention after Nebbi District LC5 Chairperson Emmanuel Urombi shared victim accounts on social media, urging residents to exercise caution.

Nebbi Municipality Mayor Ngiriker Geoffrey confirmed that the issue is under review, although only a limited number of formal complaints have so far been registered.

Resident District Commissioner Robert Abak said the case is being treated as a serious cyber-enabled fraud matter. “We are treating this as a serious cyber-enabled fraud case and will pursue all leads to apprehend those involved,” Abak said.

Authorities have not yet confirmed arrests or device recoveries, but security sources say the investigation is focusing on possible cross-border electronic crime networks targeting vulnerable markets in West Nile.

Abak urged residents to purchase mobile phones only from verified retailers and to avoid suspiciously low-priced imports lacking warranties or proper testing.

Police have called on anyone with information to report to the nearest police station or district security office as inquiries continue.

The case highlights growing concerns over sophisticated digital fraud schemes in regional towns, where informal electronics markets often lack consumer protection safeguards.
