Buyende, Uganda: The Buyende District Woman Member of Parliament-elect, Sarah Hassan Namulondo, has publicly endorsed Anita Among for Speaker of the 12th Parliament, pledging loyalty to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Addressing a media briefing in Buyende, Namulondo said her decision is guided by party discipline, ideology and the need to safeguard the party’s gains.

“I come in peace, guided by ideology and loyalty, and unconditionally support Speaker Among to retain her seat as directed by the party,” Namulondo said.

She described Among as a mobiliser who has consistently backed NRM flag bearers and strengthened party structures.

Namulondo also referenced her family ties to Among, noting that the Speaker is her sister-in-law from Kagulu in Buyende District. “We must collaborate strategically to serve our people and build the right alliances,” she said, adding that unity within Busoga is critical for development.

Asked whether she feared a potential political contest between Among and former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, Namulondo emphasised dialogue and reconciliation. “Leadership is about using power strategically, building systems and serving voters. Party discipline and alliances are essential,” she noted.

Among’s Footprint in Buyende

Ms Among, who is the Bukedea District Woman MP and Second National Vice Chairperson of the NRM, has been active in Buyende politics. During the recent general elections, she mobilised support for President Yoweri Museveni and NRM candidates in the district.

“Budiope is my second home; we will unite across constituencies to secure better service delivery,” Ms Among said during campaign engagements, referring to Budiope North MP, Eng Moses Magogo, whom she is married to.

Ms Among is most likely to face off with other contenders for Speaker of the 12th Parliament, who include:- Persis Namuganza, State Minister for Lands, Housing and Urban Development and Bukono County MP, contesting as an Independent candidate, and Norbert Mao, Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, MP-elect for Laroo-Pece Division in Gulu City and President of the Democratic Party.

Namuganza, who previously clashed with Kadaga over political alignments in Busoga, is now positioning herself against the incumbent Speaker.

The Speakership contest is expected to test party cohesion within the NRM caucus as preparations for the 12th Parliament intensify.
