Kiboga, Uganda: A prison warder attached to Kiboga Central Prisons Monday shot dead two of his supervisors and the wife of his superior in a shocking gunfire incident that has sent waves through the Uganda Prisons.
Authorities identified the suspect as Warder Moses Anguyo, who is currently on the run after allegedly opening fire on his supervisors at around 10:00am on Monday, February 23, 2026.
The deceased have been identified as Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Hope Catherine, who was serving as Deputy Officer in Charge (OC) of Kiboga Prisons; Principal Officer Bright Akishuri, who was in charge of duties; and Ms Sarah Ayebare, the wife of the Officer in Charge.
According to a statement by Wamala Region Police Spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi, it is alleged that the Deputy OC and the officer in charge of duties were conducting routine inspection and supervision when they reportedly found Anguyo chatting on WhatsApp while on duty — an act said to contravene prison regulations.
“They cautioned him and moved away, not knowing that he had not taken the caution in good faith. He followed them and opened gunfire at them, killing three people instantly, including the OC’s wife who was within the vicinity of the shooting,” SSP Kigozi said on Monday afternoon.
Authorities say the shooting happened inside the prison premises under circumstances that are still under investigation.
Anguyo reportedly fled the scene naked shortly after the attack, triggering a joint security operation.
“Kiboga police and the UPDF have responded and reinforced security at the prison facility. The killer weapon has been recovered with 15 rounds of ammunition,” SSP Kigozi confirmed.
Security agencies have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who is considered dangerous. Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any information that could lead to his arrest.
The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Kiboga Hospital for post-mortem examination as investigations continue into the motive behind the deadly shooting.
The incident has raised concerns about discipline and internal security protocols within custodial facilities, as authorities work to piece together what led to the fatal confrontation.
Authorities confirmed that although the firearm used in the shooting has been recovered, the suspect remains on the run and is considered dangerous.
“Anyone with valuable information regarding his whereabouts is urged to inform the Police,” the Prisons Service appealed.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the prisons service and the wider security fraternity, as authorities intensify efforts to apprehend the suspect and establish the full facts surrounding the deadly gunfire.
