Kamuli, Uganda: The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) Sunday trained more than 200 elected youth leaders in Kamuli District to strengthen their capacity to promote inclusive service delivery and fight discrimination in government programmes.

The one-day training, held on February 22, 2026, at Kamuli Youth Centre in Kamuli Municipality, brought together youth councillors and youth leaders from across the district.

Mr Ssasaga Johnpeter, Education and Training Officer at the Commission, said the training targeted elected youth leaders because of their direct role in influencing policy and decision-making at council level.

“Our main objective is to see that every Ugandan gets equal opportunities and that no one is marginalised or discriminated against when it comes to service delivery,” Ssasaga said.

“We selected youth leaders because when they go back to their councils, they can promote equal opportunities for everyone,” he added.

He urged citizens to take responsibility in promoting fairness within their communities.

“It is our duty as citizens to ensure that no one is left behind in government programmes. Let us promote equal opportunities starting from our families so that everybody enjoys equal rights,” he said.

During the engagement, youth leaders raised concerns about discrimination in access to bursaries and the absence of youth-friendly corners in some health facilities. Ssasaga assured participants that the Commission would follow up on the concerns raised.

The Kamuli Municipality Member of Parliament-elect, Hon Namatovu Masitula, who officiated at the closure of the training, commended the Commission for engaging young leaders.

“We are looking forward to working with the Equal Opportunities Commission as a Member of Parliament. Continue advocating for young people because they need a lot of support,” she said.

The training forms part of EOC’s nationwide efforts to build awareness and strengthen monitoring of equality and non-discrimination in public service delivery.
