Traditional healer chased out of village over witchcraft practices

Residents of Bukitimbo Cell in Kamuli District have chased out a man accused of witchcraft practices they claim caused illness and fear in the community, prompting warnings against fake traditional healers.

Local leaders address residents following the expulsion of a suspected traditional healer in Kamuli District.

Kamuli, Uganda: Angry residents of Bukitimbo Cell in Balawoli Town Council, Kamuli District, have forcefully chased a man they accuse of engaging in witchcraft practices that they claim have brought fear and mysterious illness to the community.

The man, identified as Masanka Nicholas, was expelled from the village after locals alleged he conspired with his father, Walusa Robert, to install rituals intended to generate wealth, but reportedly “turned against” the family and community.

Residents led by LC1 Chairperson Waiswa Kisawo Joseph said tensions escalated after a relative, Bamulanzeki Emma, allegedly fell ill under unclear circumstances.

“We are worried because the witchcraft has started causing death and serious illness among our people,” Waiswa said. “It is alleged that the rituals demanded nine people in the family. After targeting them, residents feared they would attack others in the village. That is why we resolved to chase them out.”

Community members claim the situation created panic, with some fearing further unexplained sicknesses and deaths.

Waiswa Yasin, Chairperson of Traditional Healers in Magogo Sub-county, condemned individuals who allegedly misuse traditional practices to exploit communities.

“These people spoil our profession. The community should report fake traditional doctors because people are losing lives and property due to their actions,” he said.

He further warned traditional healers against engaging in practices such as human sacrifice. “I warn traditional healers to avoid human sacrifices because that is not part of our practice,” Yasin added.

Local leaders have urged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious activity to relevant authorities rather than resorting to mob action.

Police in the area had not yet issued an official statement by press time.
