Entebbe, Uganda: The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has officially launched the 38th Technology & Innovation Support Centre (TISC) at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), marking a major step in strengthening research, innovation and intellectual property (IP) support in Uganda.
In a brief statement issued via its socials on Wednesday, URSB described the launch as “a significant milestone in advancing innovation, research and intellectual property support in Uganda.”
“We are thrilled to announce the official launch of the 38th Technology & Innovation Support Centre (TISC) at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), a significant milestone in advancing innovation, research and intellectual property support in Uganda,” the X post via @URSBHQ account reads in part.
The new centre is established under the Technology & Innovation Support Centres (TISC) programme — a global initiative spearheaded by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to expand access to patent information and IP services in developing countries.
According to URSB, the TISC at UVRI will provide researchers and innovators with access to high-quality technology information, patent databases, IP training and advisory services.

The centre is expected to help scientists at UVRI protect their innovations, conduct prior-art searches, and transform research findings into commercially viable solutions.
UVRI is one of Uganda’s leading biomedical research institutions, playing a critical role in disease surveillance, vaccine research and public health innovation.
The launch of the 38th TISC underscores URSB’s broader strategy to decentralise intellectual property services and embed innovation support within universities and research institutions.
Through the TISC network, innovators gain access to global patent databases, technology intelligence tools, and capacity-building programmes designed to accelerate commercialization.
Officials say the move will enhance Uganda’s competitiveness in research-driven sectors, particularly in health sciences, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.
