Kampala, Uganda: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is set to officiate at the mega launch of Tamini General Insurance Company Uganda Ltd, the country’s first dedicated Sharia-compliant insurer, during a special Office of the National Chairman (ONC) Iftar dinner next week.
The landmark event will take place on March 3, 2026 at Millennium Park in Lugogo and is expected to bring together business leaders, government officials and members of the Muslim community during the holy month of Ramadan.
The announcement was made Friday at the Office of the National Chairman in Kyambogo, where officials unveiled plans to integrate Islamic insurance into Uganda’s expanding financial services sector.
Expanding Financial Inclusion Through Takaful
Speaking at the press conference, ONC Manager and Senior Presidential Advisor, Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye welcomed the partnership between Tamini General Insurance and Salaam Bank, noting that the initiative aligns with ONC’s Ramadan outreach programs aimed at empowering low-income earners and small business operators.
“As the Office of the National Chairman, we engage vulnerable communities during Ramadan. This time, we are focusing on empowering low-income earners through risk protection,” Namyalo said.

The Chief Muzzukulu observed that Uganda’s insurance penetration remains at about one percent, underscoring the need for wider awareness and access to risk protection services.
“We want to move insurance uptake from one percent to at least three or five percent by creating awareness, especially among ordinary Ugandans who form the majority,” she added.
Licensed by the Regulator
Tamini General Insurance Chief Executive Officer Mohamud Omar confirmed that the company has been officially licensed by the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda as the country’s first dedicated Islamic insurance provider.
He explained that the company operates under the takaful model — a Sharia-compliant system based on mutual assistance and shared responsibility.
“Unlike conventional insurance, Tamini is built on community participation where members contribute to a common pool that supports participants during times of need. The funds belong to the participants,” Omar said.

Tamini is part of the Salaam Group and operates as a sister company to Salaam Bank, forming what officials describe as a complete Sharia-compliant financial ecosystem in Uganda.
Officials say the introduction of Islamic insurance will complement existing Islamic banking services and help attract individuals who previously avoided conventional insurance due to religious concerns related to riba.
President Museveni’s participation at the ONC Iftar dinner is seen as a strong endorsement of financial sector diversification and inclusive economic growth.
Organisers describe the launch as a milestone moment aimed at deepening insurance penetration, strengthening entrepreneurship and expanding access to ethical financial services across Uganda.
