According to Busoga East Police spokesperson ASP Micheal Kasadha, preliminary investigations indicate that the truck and the two motorcycles were travelling from Namayingo towards Mayuge when the motorcycles stopped to give way to an unidentified Isuzu vehicle joining the main road.

“Initial findings suggest that on Sunday the 1/03/2026 at the above date, time and place, the motor vehicle in question and motorcycles were traveling from Namayingo to Mayuge and upon reaching Girigiri, two motorcycles stopped on the left-hand side of the Namayingo–Mayuge road waiting for an unidentified Isuzu vehicle which was joining the road facing Mayuge,” ASP Kasadha said.

“Unfortunately, it got stuck in the middle of the road. At the same time, a Benz loaded with sugarcanes failed to brake, lost control and knocked the two motorcycles off the road where it overturned, leaving five motorcycle occupants dead and two others injured,” he added in a Monday statement.

Traffic officers led by the Officer in Charge of Traffic Mayuge visited the scene. The bodies were taken to Mayuge Health Centre IV, while the injured were later referred to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for specialized treatment. The vehicles were towed to CPS Mayuge pending inspection and further investigations.

DailyExpress has established that among the deceased is Simon Alamber Jackson, his wife, and their two children, all residents of Mayuge Town Council. Authorities are yet to formally release the identities of the remaining victims.

The crash adds to a growing number of fatal accidents linked to sugarcane trucks across the Busoga sub-region. Districts including Mayuge, Luuka, and Kaliro have recorded repeated incidents attributed largely to reckless driving and overloaded trucks.

Mayuge Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC) Abadi Sayid expressed concern over indiscipline among sugarcane truck drivers and warned that stricter enforcement measures will be implemented. In neighboring Luuka District, ARDC Ntogona Umar confirmed that operations have been launched targeting errant drivers operating without proper qualifications.
