Kamuli, Uganda: The Resident District Commissioner of Kamuli, Rose Birungi, has urged young patriots to love, defend and protect Uganda, saying no citizen chooses their birthplace and must therefore safeguard the country’s image and future.

Birungi made the remarks on March 2, 2026, while officiating at a joint pass-out ceremony for 1,003 students from Kamuli Progressive College and St John Bosco Kamuli Secondary School who completed a one-week patriotism training at Kamuli Municipal Grounds.

“No one made a choice to be born in Uganda. This is our motherland, so we must love it and protect it,” Birungi said.

She commended the schools for organizing a joint ceremony, describing it as a symbol of unity and respect among institutions.

“This is a good idea. It creates connection between the two schools and reminds students that even if they study in different schools, they are all Ugandans fighting for one goal,” she added.

Patriotism as Foundation for Citizenship

Ngobi Charles, the Busoga Regional Coordinator for Patriotism, said the training equips students with values essential for responsible citizenship.

“Patriotism trainings are shaping our students to be good citizens because they are taught discipline, environmental protection, leadership, the history of Uganda, how to fight diseases, financial literacy and community work (Bulungi Bwa Nsi),” Ngobi explained.

He also highlighted the significance of military-style parade drills during the training.

“This parade is important because it builds discipline. As you have seen, one student commands and others follow. It also helps them become good time managers and keeps them physically fit,” he said.

Gender Breakdown

Of the 1,003 students passed out, 337 were from St John Bosco Kamuli Secondary School (151 boys and 186 girls), while 666 were from Kamuli Progressive College (302 boys and 364 girls).

Local leaders described the training as instrumental in instilling national values and strengthening unity among the youth in Busoga sub-region.
