Kampala, Uganda: The Police in Kampala are holding two suspects in custody after a police sniffer dog “Pepper” helped track them down in connection with the murder of a 34-year-old man in Kalerwe.
The suspects, identified as Ssebuya and Johnson, are currently detained at Wandegeya Police Division as investigations into the killing continue.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that officers received information on Monday, March 02, at around 8:00 am about a body lying near the fence of Dusuma Garage in Kalerwe.
Upon receiving the report, police immediately deployed a K9 canine unit to the scene to assist in tracking possible suspects. At the scene, the police sniffer dog Pepper was introduced to the area where the body was found.
According to investigators, Pepper quickly picked up a scent from the deceased and began tracking movements linked to the crime.
He first followed the scent trail for about 10 metres, leading officers into the house of the garage askari (security guard). The dog later exited the house and continued tracking into the garage compound.

The K9 continued moving around the garage fence before returning inside the compound.
Eventually, Pepper led officers to a specific spot where the askari and other workers usually sit during working hours. At that point, the dog lay down, a trained signal used by police dogs to indicate the presence of important evidence.
Police then recovered a metal bar stained with blood, believed to have been used in the assault that killed the victim.
Further searches conducted in the askari’s house reportedly led to the recovery of spears and arrows, which have been taken as exhibits to aid investigations.
Following the discovery of the suspected murder weapon and other items, police arrested the two suspects.
Investigations are ongoing as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing.
