Kampala, Uganda: Makerere University has officially dissolved the 91st Students’ Guild Cabinet and the Guild Representative Council (GRC) following the expiry of their term of office.
In a notice issued March 6, 2026, the university’s Dean of Students, Winifred Kabumbuli, announced that the dissolution took effect on March 5, 2026, in accordance with the Makerere University Students’ Guild Statute 2022.
The decision affects the Guild Cabinet, the Guild Representative Council and other guild organs, with the exception of the Guild Tribunal, which will continue operating.
The dissolution marks the end of the current student leadership’s term led by Bobi Wine’s nephew, James Churchill Ssentamu, and ushers the institution a transitional phase ahead of the next guild administration.
According to Dr Kabumbuli, the Guild Tribunal will remain active to provide a platform for students to raise grievances and concerns during the transition period. The tribunal will operate until the second sitting of the next Guild Representative Council, as provided for under Article 12(d) of the Makerere University Students’ Guild Statute 2022.
“The Guild Tribunal will continue to operate as usual and will provide a platform for students to raise concerns and grievances in a fair and impartial manner until the second sitting of the next Guild Representative Council in accordance with Article 12(d) of the Makerere University Students’ Guild Statute 2022,” Dr Kabumbuli wrote.

She further noted that during the transition period, the affairs of the Students’ Guild will be overseen by the Guild Electoral Commission working together with the Department of the Dean of Students.
“In the meantime, all affairs the Student Guild shall be handled by the Electoral Commission with the University Management through the Department of the Dean of Students in accordance with article 110 of the Makerere University Students Guild Statute 2022,” she said.
The university also commended the outgoing guild leadership for their service during their term. “We thank the outgoing Student Guild leadership for their service and dedication during their term of office and wish them the best in their future endeavours,” Dr. Kabumbuli stated in the notice.
The Students’ Guild is the main student leadership structure at Makerere University, responsible for representing student interests and coordinating activities of student leaders across various halls of residence, colleges and academic units.
The Guild Representative Council functions as the legislative arm of the guild government, while the Guild Cabinet executes policies and programmes under the leadership of the elected Guild President.
With the 92nd Guild Electoral Commission already in place, preparations for the next Guild members have already kick-started, with a detailed roadmap to be shared soon.
