Iran names Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba as new Supreme Leader

Iran has named Mojtaba Khamenei as its new Supreme Leader, succeeding his father Ali Khamenei in a historic leadership transition that could shape the country’s politics and foreign policy.

Tehran, Iran: Iran’s powerful clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, has named Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader, succeeding his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a historic and controversial leadership transition.

The decision places the 56-year-old Shiite cleric at the helm of the Islamic Republic, making him the most powerful political and religious authority in Iran with ultimate control over the country’s armed forces, judiciary and key state institutions.

Mojtaba Khamenei had long been viewed as a potential successor to his father due to his deep influence within Iran’s political establishment and strong ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), one of the most powerful institutions in the country.

The Assembly of Experts, the constitutional body responsible for appointing and supervising the Supreme Leader, approved his elevation following the vacancy in the position previously held by his father for more than three decades.

The appointment marks one of the most significant political developments in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which established the current system of clerical rule.

Analysts say the move could spark debate both inside and outside Iran because the Islamic Republic was founded on principles rejecting hereditary leadership, while critics argue that the succession effectively concentrates power within the same family, raising concerns about dynastic rule in a political system designed to avoid monarchy.

Supporters, however, say Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment offers continuity and stability for Iran during a period of heightened regional tensions and domestic economic challenges.

As Supreme Leader, Mojtaba will wield broad authority over Iran’s strategic direction, including defence policy, intelligence agencies and major appointments across the government.

Under Iran’s political structure, the Supreme Leader remains the highest authority above the elected president and parliament.

Observers say his leadership will likely shape Iran’s domestic politics, regional alliances and relations with Western powers for years to come.
