Obongi, Uganda: Police in Obongi District are investigating circumstances under which a 13-year-old Primary Four pupil was allegedly raped and strangled to death inside her home in Palorinya Sub-county, sparking a mob justice incident in which angry residents killed the suspected attacker.
The victimi identified as Poni Vivian, was a pupil at Chinyi Primary School, who lived in Keguru Block 12A Extension, Chinyi Village, Paalujo Parish.
According to police, the tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 9, 2026, while the girl was sleeping in the house alongside her younger sister, Blessing Likiya, aged about six years.
North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SP Collins Asea confirmed the incident, saying the girl’s mother, Fatina Liong, returned home at around 2:00 am and discovered her daughter dead.
Preliminary police findings indicate that a neighbour, Dumo Daniel, a 39-year-old peasant farmer and South Sudanese refugee, allegedly entered the house where the children were sleeping.
Investigators say the suspect reportedly struggled with the girl in an attempt to sexually assault her before raping and strangling her to death. The younger sister, who was present during the incident, reportedly helped identify the suspect to community members.
Police say residents, upon learning of the suspect’s alleged involvement, attacked and killed him through mob action shortly after the incident.
Authorities have since opened a case file under SD REF: 06/09/03/2026 and OBONGI CRB: 055/2026 to facilitate investigations.
A team of officers, including Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), visited the scene, documented evidence, took photographs and recorded statements from the complainant and other witnesses.

Police also completed PF Forms 48A and 48B, while a post-mortem examination has been conducted on the deceased.
SP Asea said the suspect was also known within the community as an opium smoker.
Police have condemned the mob justice incident and urged residents to allow law enforcement agencies to handle suspects through the legal justice system.
Authorities say investigations into the case are ongoing.
