Iganga, Uganda: The Chairperson of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), Prof. Dr. Muhamadi Lubega Kisambira, has called on Muslims to use the holy month of Ramadan to fulfil pledges and commitments, saying the period offers a special opportunity for believers to honour promises and strengthen their faith.
Dr. Lubega made the appeal on Monday while fulfilling several pledges worth close to Shs100 million at Lubega Institute in Buseyi, Iganga District, where beneficiaries from different districts across the country gathered to receive financial support.
The beneficiaries included individuals, schools and institutions that had previously been promised assistance.
Speaking during the engagement, the UMSC chairperson said Ramadan is a time for Muslims to reflect on their responsibilities and honour commitments made to others. “I have been moving across the country for the last four years making pledges at different events. When I sat down and calculated them, I realised they had reached nearly Shs130 million,” Dr. Lubega said.
“I have now started fulfilling them. Some beneficiaries will receive their full pledges today, while others will receive half and the remaining balance will be paid later,” he added.
Dr. Lubega also revealed that some individuals had been using the issue of pledges to attack his leadership and attempt to tarnish his name. “You know some people have been using this as a tool to blackmail us, but Allah has a right timing of doing things,” he said.
He noted that the meeting was initially intended to remain private but decided to publicly deliver the pledges in order to counter critics. “I did not intend for this to appear in the news, but I wanted to disarm those who have been using these pledges for selfish interests,” he explained.

Dr. Lubega also thanked supporters of Lubega Institute, urging them to act as ambassadors for the institution as it prepares to transition into a University of Science and Technology expected to open in May this year.
According to him, the planned university aims to expand access to higher education by offering a variety of science and technology programmes.
The event attracted several Muslim leaders, including Iganga District Kadhi Sheikh Sinan Muhammad Muwanika, who praised Dr. Lubega for his commitment to supporting communities.
“I want to thank you for having such a generous heart. This character reflects the values instilled in you by your late father who nurtured you with discipline and religious principles,” Sheikh Muwanika said.

Meanwhile, Nile High School directors Mr. Mwase Gideon Ronald and Mr. Mayinja Bumali commended the UMSC chairperson for supporting the completion of the school’s science laboratory project.
The laboratory project was initially highlighted during the school’s 20-year anniversary celebrations in November 2023, where Dr Lubega pledged financial support.
School leaders say the facility will strengthen science education and improve learning conditions for students.
