Namisindwa, Uganda: Security agencies in Namisindwa District have launched a manhunt for a man accused of killing his neighbour following a dispute over a dog.
The suspect, Joseph Musawale, a resident of Bukokho Parish in Bukokho Sub-county, is wanted in connection with the murder of Gerald Nyungu, who succumbed to severe injuries after being attacked with a panga.
According to local leaders, the fatal incident occurred on the evening of Friday, March 6, as Nyungu was heading to Bukokho Church of Uganda for an overnight prayer.
Preliminary reports indicate that the two neighbours had earlier developed a misunderstanding after Musawale allegedly accused Nyungu of kicking his dog.
Authorities say the suspect reportedly lay in wait for the victim before attacking him with a panga, leaving him critically injured.
Nyungu was rushed by Good Samaritans to Magale Health Centre IV for treatment but later died from the injuries.
Local leaders say security teams have intensified efforts to track down the suspect who fled shortly after the attack.
The Bukokho Sub-county LCIII Chairperson, John Wafula, confirmed that security structures in the area had been activated to locate the suspect. “We have mobilised security teams and local leaders to ensure that the suspect is arrested and brought to justice,” Wafula said.
He also expressed concern over the growing trend of youths moving around at night carrying pangas. “We are seeing many young people roaming at night with pangas, especially during vigils and night parties. Anyone found moving with a panga at night risks arrest,” he warned.

Leaders Blame Violence on Drug Abuse
The Namisindwa LCV Chairperson-elect, Emma Bwayo, attributed the incident to rising cases of drug abuse and mental health challenges among young people.
According to Bwayo, the district has recently witnessed several violent incidents involving youths. “Many young people today cannot control their anger because of drug abuse and mental health problems,” he said.
He revealed that within just one week, he had attended the burial of three victims of violent crimes in the district.
These include the killing of Lonah Mutonyi in Bukiabi by her stepson, the defilement and murder of a 19-year-old girl whose body was later dumped in the hills, and the recent death of Gerald Nyungu.
Meanwhile, the Namisindwa Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Kaswabuli JB, called on parents to take greater responsibility in guiding their children.
He said some parents have neglected their roles in raising disciplined children. “Many parents have abandoned their responsibilities and left the upbringing of children to teachers and government officials,” Kaswabuli said.
The RDC pledged to intensify operations targeting idle youths and criminal elements in the district.
Nyungu was laid to rest on Monday, March 09, as family members and residents demand for justice.
