Iganga, Uganda: Uganda Police has called on churches in the Busoga sub-region to partner with security agencies in fighting crime while also mobilising believers to utilise the prevailing peace in the country to overcome poverty.
The call was made by Commissioner of Police Anatoli Muleterwa, the head of the Community Policing Department, while representing AIGP Ubaldo Bamunoba, the Chief Political Commissar of Uganda Police, during celebrations marking the 13th anniversary of Wonders Christian Church International in Namugalwe Town Council, Iganga District.
Addressing hundreds of believers during the event, Muleterwa urged religious leaders and congregants to actively support community policing initiatives aimed at reducing crime in their communities.
“There is freedom of worship in this country because we have peace. Therefore, I implore you to work with police and the community to fight criminals,” Muleterwa said.
He added that churches should encourage their members to take advantage of government development programmes to improve their livelihoods.
“Your focus should not only be on prayers but also on working hard to get out of poverty by embracing government programmes like the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga and other wealth creation initiatives,” he said.
Police Emphasise Community Policing

Muleterwa said Uganda Police remains committed to strengthening community policing structures to improve security and build stronger partnerships with local communities.
He commended church leaders for supporting community initiatives and urged religious institutions to prioritise unity and collective development.
“Churches should look beyond differences and focus on purposeful goals that improve the lives of believers and communities,” he said.
The Member of Parliament-elect for Kigulu North, Samuel Kungu Bamuteeze, also praised the church for promoting unity and social transformation among believers.
Bamuteeze, popularly known as Simion, said religious institutions play a key role in shaping communities and supporting development. “I remember on December 31, 2025, I was here and the church prayed for my victory in the elections, which came to pass,” Bamuteeze said.
He pledged to work with church leaders to support economic empowerment programmes in the constituency. “I urge believers to continue praying to God while also working hard to improve their livelihoods. As your Member of Parliament, I will support initiatives that transform our communities,” he added.
Meanwhile, Apostle Collins Muwanguzi, the lead pastor of Wonders Christian Church International, thanked the government for maintaining peace and guaranteeing freedom of worship in Uganda.
He also commended security agencies for ensuring stability across the country. “We appreciate the government for protecting freedom of worship and we thank security agencies for maintaining peace that allows people to freely serve God,” Muwanguzi said.
