Kamuli, Uganda: The Kamuli Muslim District Khadi, Sheikh Ismail Kazibwe, has called for peace, harmony and humanity as Muslims and Christians observe the holy periods of Ramadan and Lent.

Speaking during Duwa prayers organised by Haji Badru Walekaki in Kamuli Municipality, Kazibwe urged believers to use the spiritual season to pray for global peace and unity.

He cautioned against global tensions, warning that conflicts such as the Iran-Israel situation should not be interpreted along religious lines. “The war between Iran and Israel should not escalate into religious conflict… we should instead use this period to pray for peace so that lives, property and economies are protected,” he said.

Kazibwe emphasized that the last ten days of Ramadan, marked by Itekaf (spiritual retreat), should be dedicated to prayers for peace and harmony. “We should use Itekaf, Duwa and Salah to pray for peace in the world,” he added.

The Khadi also challenged Muslims to uphold Islamic values, discipline and good conduct beyond the Ramadan period.

Meanwhile, the Imam of Kamuli, Sheikh Abed Haikal, called for stronger interfaith cooperation, urging Ugandans to embrace coexistence under platforms like the Inter-Religious Council.

“We need to rediscover humanity, serve the less privileged and work together regardless of religious differences,” Haikal said.

He highlighted the importance of unity and mutual respect among religious communities, encouraging collaboration for national development and social cohesion.

Kamuli Assistant Town Clerk Monica Nairuba echoed similar sentiments, urging the public to appreciate one another and work for the common good. “We all serve one God… religion is about doing good and promoting peace,” she said.

Haji Walekaki described the Duwa prayers as a continuation of a long-standing family tradition of bringing together Muslims and Christians in unity. “We dedicate this Duwa to our departed members whose legacy promoted unity and peaceful coexistence,” he said.

The prayers also attracted children from local schools, highlighting the importance of instilling values of unity and spirituality among the younger generation.
