Pallisa, Uganda: Pallisa District Woman MP-elect Catherine Achola has called on residents to abandon divisive politics and embrace unity to drive development, as leaders and clergy paid tribute to the late Rev. Okiror Peter.

Achola made the remarks on Monday during the burial ceremony held in Agule Sub-county, describing the deceased as a unifying figure whose legacy should inspire collective action.

Addressing mourners, Achola urged leaders and residents to shift focus from political camps to shared development goals. “I implore my fellow newly elected and former leaders at all levels to unite and support each other with ideas and strategies that will improve the livelihoods of our people,” she said.

“My arms are open to all the people of Pallisa. Time for politics is over—it’s now time to serve our people.”

Achola described Rev. Okiror as a peacemaker and dedicated servant who worked tirelessly to uplift communities across Pallisa. “This death leaves a huge gap that is hard to close in Pallisa District. We shall surely miss him, but his legacy will shine forever,” she said.

She also commended the Church of Uganda for demonstrating unity during the send-off.

Agule County MP-elect Josephine Ibaseret praised the late priest as a truthful and devoted servant of God. “Rev. Okiror was a unique servant who always stood for truth and connected deeply with the people,” she said.

The ceremony was presided over by Dr Rev Samuel Bogere Egesa, Bishop of Bukedi Diocese, who urged Christians to strengthen their faith. “For those who have not fully embraced salvation, this is the time to deepen your faith and prepare your path while still alive,” he said.

The ceremony concluded with renewed calls for unity among leaders and communities in Pallisa, with speakers emphasizing the need to build on Rev. Okiror’s legacy of peace, service, and community cohesion.

The burial attracted a cross-section of clergy, political leaders, and community members from across the region.
