Kassanda, Uganda: Police in Kassanda District are on a manhunt for an unidentified woman who allegedly posed as a medical officer and abducted a three-day-old baby from Kiganda Health Centre IV.
According to Wamala Region Police Spokesperson, SP Lameck Kigozi, the suspect executed the scheme on March 15 after gaining access to the maternity ward under the guise of a health worker.
Police said the baby girl, daughter of Muhindo Joachim and Nalubowa Ruth, had been admitted at the facility on March 12 after developing complications, but later stabilised and was moved to the postnatal ward.
Kigozi revealed that the suspect entered the ward posing as a medical officer and began moving around, attending to patients and reviewing treatment notes.

“Upon reaching the victim’s bed, she picked up the baby and examined her treatment notes. She then informed the mother that the baby’s condition had deteriorated and required medication that had not yet been administered,” he said.
“The suspect gave the mother UGX 10,000 to purchase the alleged medication from a nearby pharmacy. When the mother left the ward, the suspect took advantage of her absence and fled with the baby,” Kigozi added.
The regional police spox said a case was reported at Kiganda Police Station, and investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest the suspect.
“Anyone who comes across a woman with a newborn under suspicious circumstances, especially one not known to have been pregnant, should report immediately to the nearest police station,” Kigozi said.
