Seven killed, six injured in Iganga–Jinja highway crash

A late-night overtaking attempt turned deadly on the Iganga–Jinja highway, leaving seven people dead and six injured—renewing concerns over reckless driving and rising road fatalities on one of eastern Uganda’s busiest routes.

Wreckage of the taxi vehicle involved in a fatal crash at Namakunyu along the Iganga–Jinja highway.

IGANGA, UGANDA: At least seven people have been killed and six others injured in a fatal road crash along the Iganga–Jinja highway, police have confirmed.

The accident occurred late Friday night at around 11:35 PM at Namakunyu, involving a Toyota Hiace taxi (UBR 062Q) and a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer (KDU 206C/ZF0842).

Busoga East Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha said preliminary investigations point to a dangerous overtaking attempt as the cause of the crash.

“Initial findings indicate that the taxi, travelling from Jinja, was overtaking another vehicle when it collided head-on with the trailer coming from the opposite direction,” Kasadha said.

All the victims were occupants of the taxi.

The deceased have been identified as Kibanda Mudasiru (28) of Nateete, Wakiso District; Isaac Sabina (28) of Semuto, Nakaseke; Abudallah Nyiro of Busia; Samuel Odokonyero (28) of Nwoya; Ngolobe Eddie (24) of Bugiri; Wandera Edris (34) of Busia; and Balijuka Kirungi Magidu (32) of Masindi.

The injured were rushed to Iganga General Hospital for treatment, where the bodies of the deceased were also taken for postmortem examination.

Police said the scene was visited by the Officer in Charge Traffic Iganga and a team of investigators, who documented evidence before towing the wreckage to Iganga Central Police Station pending inspection.

Authorities have launched investigations into the crash.

The Iganga–Jinja highway is among the busiest roads in eastern Uganda and has recorded a growing number of fatal accidents, often linked to reckless overtaking and human error.

Police have urged motorists to observe traffic regulations, particularly during night travel, warning that failure to do so continues to cost lives.
